Noodlin’ is a story about a man rooted in the past and embroiled in a personal struggle against the changing world around him. It’s about the moment he comes to realise that change cannot be resisted forever. Like death, it takes us all.
Noodlin’ is featured in issue 24 of Kzine’s monthly journal and is one of the first short fantasy stories I ever wrote. I feel honoured to be included amongst some great stories and talented writers.
Kzine is a journal I’ve had my eye on for a while and I’m thrilled the brilliant editor, Graeme Hurry, decided to accept.
If you’ve got Kindle Unlimited you can read this journal for free. If not, it’s £2 for the ebook and £3.99 for a paperback. Links below! Also below you’ll find the first few paragraphs, and beneath that, the story behind Noodlin’.

Noodlin’ is an ode to one of my heroes—Jeremy Wade. There’s a good chance you may be asking ‘who?’. The guy from River Monsters!
I loved watching River Monsters and for a good few years I went through an obsessive fishing phase. But the reason why I think I enjoyed the show was not so much for the fishing, rather for Jeremy Wade battling to land his catch; surviving a plane crash in the Amazon and carrying on; trekking for days to reach places unexplored by man; diving into piranha and shark-infested waters; never giving up despite the universe seemingly against him. He’s brave and fearless and he does what he loves, and that attitude, I think, has inspired me to do the same.
So thank you, Jeremy. This one’s for you.
