How Can A Knight Name Generator Help You?

The purpose of a knight name generator is to give you quick, quality suggestions for character names when your mind goes blank. For example, you could be creating a character for a tabletop game campaign, or you may be trying to think of a name for a new character in your fantasy novel.

It’s not easy to come up with a name. If you give a character a poor one then you run the risk of readers not liking them. An example of a poor name could include one that’s difficult to read or hard to pronounce.

A common complaint about names in the fantasy genre is the random apostrophe. It’s not uncommon for some names to have two thrown in there. For example, “Ali’an’an”. I just made that up, but it illustrates the point that names ought to be clear to the reader.

To achieve this, I like to use shorter names for protagonists and antagonists. It’s common in other well-known books too. For instance, in Game of Thrones, which features lots of knights, many characters have simple names with subtle adjustments, like Jaime, Jon, Bran, Arya, Catelyn.

The suggestions offered by the knight name generator above are simple and without apostrophes. They’re also tailored toward the different races that you can find in the genre, as well as others like scifi.

Knights In Fantasy

Knights are defined as professional soldiers, men at arms, those who are paid to go and fight the wars of their king or queen. They may hold land, as medieval knights did. They may have servants, or they may be quite the opposite—poor with rusting armor and lame horses.

Historically, the term knight comes from the middle ages. We naturally think of soldiers clad in armor carrying a range of deadly weapons, all designed to kill in a variety of ways, be it stabbing, slashing or bludgeoning.

A knight in full plate armor would have been covered from head to toe. There were some gaps, typically at the joints, like behind the knees, or more painfully, the groin. And of course, the visor. To overcome such armor, you had to get a knight on the ground and stab them through the gaps. Either that or bludgeoning them to death, though that would take an awful lot of manpower.

Someone attacking a knight with a sword may see their blade get lodged in the plate armor without penetrating. An axe may have a similar outcome, but if it’s heavier it may have a better chance of landing a blow.

Bludgeoning weapons like war hammers or maces worked best against a knight’s armor. While they may not get through plate and chain mail, they could deal haemorrhaging blows that could bruise or break bones.

With such formidable armor, medieval knights were like walking tanks. To illustrate this, we can look at the Battle of Montgisard during the Crusades. There, 375 knights, 80 Templar knights and a few thousand men defeated an army of over 20,000.
